The Advanced Course is designed to provide rigorous coursework that will introduce students to the expectations and techniques of law school. It is ideally suited to those students who are strongly committed to pursuing a legal career and would like the challenge of engaging the legal process.
The program lasts two weeks--from July 28 through August 8--and classes are in session from 1 PM to 4 PM Eastern time each day, with a short break in the middle of each session. Classes are online, conducted via Zoom.
The course covers many critical concepts that will be essential to 1L students, with a particular focus on analytical and critical reading and writing skills. Classes will be conducted using the Socratic Method to discuss cases. Students will be taught to use the IRAC/CREACC method to structure their thinking and writing, and eventually will draft their own legal memo. Students will exit the program with a clear sense of how legal education works, as well as their own capacity to succeed as a law student.
Students will also receive preparation for their law school application process. This includes:
Course size will be strictly capped to ensure each student has the opportunity to actively participate. Students will be responsible for doing course readings each night so that they can come prepared to discuss the material the following day. Students will also be responsible for drafting a legal memo (approximately 3-5 pages) and two other short writing assignments.
After the course is completed, students will be given a credit for one hour of free individual advising--redeemable during the remaining calendar year.
Cost: $500
All course materials (readings, sample personal statements, etc.) will be provided electronically at no cost. Students will need to have a working free Zoom account to join the classes.
Because space in the advanced course is limited, a $50 deposit is requested to secure a seat.
